The local action “Conservation of traditional varieties of fruit trees and shrubs from Șara Făgărașului”

Weekend dedicated to natural heritage in Șara Făgărașului

The University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest, through the Faculty of Horticulture, ran this weekend two complementary initiatives dedicated to protecting local biodiversity, preserving traditional varieties and nature education.

Main activity of the weekend: sample collection
During the two field days, the team of the Faculty of Horticulture collected 64 samples of plant material (grafting branches) from local varieties of fruit trees, directly from the orchards and gardens of Șara Făgărașului.

These samples will be phytosanitarily analyzed in the faculty’s laboratories, and the healthy material will be sent for multiplication to the Pietroasa-Istrita Didactic Research and Development Station, after which the grafted trees will be replanted in their original areas.
This stage represents a major step in the long-term conservation of the region’s traditional fruit-growing heritage.

Education for nature – building a responsible generation

On Friday, the USAMV Bucharest team was at the Viștea de Jos Secondary School, where the Head works. Dr. Cosmin Mihai gave an interactive presentation about birds and wildlife useful for gardens and orchards.
The children discovered the essential role of these species in local ecosystems and learned how they can contribute to their protection through simple gestures.

The activity was carried out in partnership with:
🔸 GAL – East of the Făgăraş Country
🔸 GAL Microregion – Valea Sâmbetei
🔸 GAL Șara Oltului
🔸 Association SOS Șara Făgăraşului

By combining conservation activities – such as the harvesting of plant material for the propagation of traditional varieties – with educational actions dedicated to young people, we strengthen the link between horticultural science, natural heritage and the local community.

These complementary directions are fundamental for a future in which the biodiversity of Șări Făgărașului is valued, protected and passed on to the next generations.

At the same time, a collaboration agreement was signed between USAMV, represented by Prof. Dr. Florin Stănică, and the țara Făgărașului Intercommunity Development Association headed by the president Florin Ioani, through which the university will carry out extension and consultancy activities in the local communities of țara Făgărașului, with the involvement of teaching staff, researchers and students.

Thanks to everyone involved for your support, collaboration and openness! Together we protect and cultivate the natural wealth of this region!
