Years of Excellence
in Horticulture Education
With over 75 years of academic tradition, the Faculty of Horticulture is dedicated to educating highly qualified specialists in horticulture and related fields. Our core mission is to prepare professionals in horticulture, floriculture and floral art, ornamental arboriculture and landscaping, fruit growing, viticulture, and winemaking—disciplines that play a vital role in sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and the green economy.
Our faculty focuses on developing practical and research-driven expertise, enabling graduates to successfully integrate into production sectors, scientific research, education, and other market-oriented professional fields. Academic programs are continuously aligned with labor market needs and emerging industry trends.
The Faculty of Horticulture offers two complementary study programms—Horticulture and Landscape Specialization—designed to provide students with strong theoretical knowledge, applied skills, and interdisciplinary competencies. We deliver accredited university programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels, fully aligned with the Bologna and Berlin Agreements and compatible with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). All programs are structured in progressive educational cycles to support academic excellence, mobility, and career development.
Cycle I
4 year courses that train engineers;
Cycle II
2 year course that prepares engineers with a master’s degree;
Cycle III
3-year course that prepares specialists with a doctor’s degree in horticulture.
In 2018, the Faculty of Horticulture in Bucharest celebrated 70 years since its foundation and as many years of uninterrupted activity devoted to the training of horticultural specialists, and 20 years of landscape specialists.
The establishment of the first landscaping specialization in our country was possible, also in Bucharest, as a result of the special effort of 3 great personalities: Mrs. Prof. Dr. Ana Felicia Iliescu, Mr. Arch. Donose Valentin and the late Eng. Landscape Engineer Florin Teodosiu. Thus, their fields have rightly won the respect and consideration of many generations of landscape engineers and not only.
History
The study of horticulture preceded the appearance of a specialized faculty included in agricultural education.
Concern for horticulture issues appears in the form of specific disciplines within the agronomic program.
In 1867 curriculum of the Pantelimon School, the discipline “Horticulture” taught by H. Dik appears.
In 1875, in addition to the School of Agriculture and Forestry in Herăstrău, a horticulture section was created, led by P. Vansanten – specialist of Belgian origin.
Until 1948, horticultural courses were taught by personalities such as: Wilhem Knechtel (1873-1910), Ion Haşeganu (1911-1939), Alexandru Scarlat (1927-1939), Pavel Bobeleanu (1940-1941), Teodor Bordeianu (1941-1948).
In 1948, the Faculty of Horticulture was established by decision MI 263327 published in the Official Gazette 249/1948.
In 1998, the first landscape specialization in Romania was established within the Faculty of Horticulture.
